Firing Makes Pottery Strong and Tough

When we fire pottery, it’s an essential step that really changes the clay and the glaze, making them hard and durable. Imagine baking a cake; just like the oven turns raw batter into a delicious treat, firing transforms soft clay into tough pots and bowls!

During the firing process, chemical changes happen in both the clay and the glaze. In the clay, tiny particles bond together, creating a strong structure. At the same time, the glaze, which is the shiny surface that makes pottery look pretty, melts and becomes a smooth coating that protects the pottery.

This means that the finished pottery can withstand wear and tear, like being dropped or getting wet, so it can be used for a long time. So, firing is like giving the pottery a superpower that makes it ready for everyday use!
