Satin Matte Glaze (Cone 6 to °F)

Hey there, future pottery pro! Let’s talk about something really cool called satin matte glaze. This is a special coating that potters use to make their finished pieces look nice and feel smooth.

Glaze is like a shiny paint made for clay. When you use a satin matte glaze, it gives your pottery a soft, slightly shiny finish that looks great! This type of glaze is meant to be fired at Cone 6, which is a way that potters measure heat.

In the pottery world, Cone 6 means that you heat your clay in a kiln (a super hot oven for pottery) to about 2232°F (that’s really hot!). The high temperature causes the glaze to melt and create a beautiful look on your pottery.

So, what kinds of objects can we make with satin matte glaze? Here are 7 examples with the size you’d expect when using this glaze:

  1. Cup – A small drinking cup
  2. Bowl – A breakfast bowl
  3. Plate – A dinner plate
  4. Vase – A medium-sized flower vase
  5. Tile – A square tile for decoration
  6. Planter – A little pot for a plant
  7. Spoon Rest – A small dish to hold cooking spoons

Remember, when you use satin matte glaze on these objects and fire them to Cone 6 at 2232°F, they’ll turn out beautifully! Happy pottery making!
