Cone 4 = 2161°F (1183°C)

Hey there! Let’s talk about something fun: pottery! When we make pottery, we shape clay into different objects and then bake them in a special oven called a kiln. To make sure the pottery becomes strong, we need to heat it up to the right temperature.

Now, the numbers you see here, Cone 4 and 2161°F (1183°C), are really important for pottery. Cone 4 is a measurement of heat that tells us how hot the kiln should get to make certain types of clay, called stoneware, become strong and durable. When the kiln reaches 2161°F (1183°C), the clay changes and gets all the moisture out, making it ready for its final form.

Here’s a cool way to think about it: imagine if you were making a cake! You need to bake it at the right temperature so it turns out delicious. If it’s not hot enough, the cake won’t cook well, and if it’s too hot, it might burn. It’s the same with clay!

Now, let’s look at seven things that can be made from clay that is just as hot as the temperature mentioned (2161°F or 1183°C):

  1. Dinner Plates – Perfect for serving your meals!
  2. Mugs – Great for sipping hot chocolate or tea.
  3. Bowls – Ideal for salads or snacks.
  4. Vases – Beautiful for holding flowers.
  5. Tiles – Used to decorate floors or walls.
  6. Teapots – Excellent for brewing your favorite tea.
  7. Flower Pots – Awesome for growing plants.

So remember, just like cooking, heating clay for pottery is all about getting to that perfect temperature to make amazing things!
