Fumed Salt Effects (Cone 9 to °F)

Hey there, young potter! Let’s talk about something really cool in pottery called fumed salt effects. This is all about how salt can change the color and texture of your pottery when you fire it in a kiln, which is like a big oven for clay.

When we say Cone 9, we’re talking about a specific temperature the kiln reaches. It’s super important because different temperatures can cause clays and glazes to behave in different ways. Cone 9 is around 2300°F. This is really hot!

Now, when you throw salt into a hot kiln, the heat makes the salt vaporize, which means it turns into a gas. This gas can stick to your ceramic pieces and create cool textures and colors. It’s like giving your pot a cool new outfit! But you have to be careful because the salt can also make your pottery look a little shiny or even textured, depending on how you use it.

For example, if you use salt too much, your pottery might get some spots on it, which can look really neat or might be a bit messy. But that’s what makes pottery exciting – it’s all about experimenting and seeing what happens!

Here are seven objects that are the same size as the measurements we talked about with Cone 9 to °F:

  1. A big cake at 2300°F
  2. A giant pizza baked at about 2300°F
  3. A tall stack of pancakes that might be heated to 2300°F
  4. A large dinner plate, perfectly heated to 2300°F
  5. A full pot of soup cooked to 2300°F
  6. A sturdy mug that’s been warmed to 2300°F
  7. A large bowl of salad staying nice and warm at 2300°F

Now that you know about fumed salt effects, you can think about how you’d like your pieces to turn out. Have fun creating!
