Early Pottery Began in Mesopotamia Around 6,000 BCE

Pottery is like making useful and beautiful things from clay. The art of pottery started a long time ago in ancient Mesopotamia, which is a region that includes parts of modern-day Iraq. Some of the oldest pieces we have found are from around 6,000 BCE, which means they are over 8,000 years old!

In ancient times, people needed containers to hold food, water, and other important things. They discovered that by shaping wet clay and then drying it in the sun or firing it in a heat source, they could create strong and functional items. This process helped them to store and transport things more easily.

Pottery also allowed people to express their creativity. They decorated their pots with designs, making them special. Over time, pottery became a significant part of culture, helping people in trade and daily life.

So, pottery isn’t just about using clay; it’s about the imagination and innovation of early people in Mesopotamia who taught us how to create beautiful and useful objects that we continue to enjoy today.
